Apple is leaning hard into privacy as its competitive edge in AI. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the redesigned Siri arriving with iOS 27 will give users the ability to auto-delete their chat histories, with options to retain conversations for 30 days, one year, or indefinitely.
That puts Apple in a different lane from most AI competitors, who typically offer only limited incognito modes at best. The move signals that Apple is willing to trade some of the personalization benefits that come with storing user data in exchange for a stronger privacy pitch.
The bet is that a growing segment of users are uncomfortable with how AI platforms handle their conversations. Whether that anxiety translates into a genuine market advantage for Apple remains to be seen, especially as Siri continues to trail ChatGPT, Gemini, and others in raw capability.
