The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has inaugurated India's first artificial intelligence clinic within a government hospital. The facility was launched online by the Additional Director General of Health Services. This initiative operates under the GIMS Centre for Medical Innovation.
The primary objective of the clinic is to allow healthcare startups to test and validate their solutions in a real-world clinical environment. GIMS Director Brigadier Dr. Rakesh Kumar Gupta stated that the facility addresses a critical need for direct innovation access. The Joint Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals also attended the event. He described the initiative as a key national platform for medical devices.
Over 100 experts participated in the ceremony. This group included international figures such as Dr. Sivakumar Manickam from the London Essex NHS Trust. The clinic has secured academic collaborations with IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIIT Lucknow. Research will focus on medical imaging and clinical decision support systems.
A physical launch for the facility is scheduled for January 6. Officials expect the implementation of AI technology to enhance patient safety and reduce treatment times. This development marks a shift toward modernizing infrastructure in the public healthcare sector.
